Green Schools

Scoil Íde are proud to take part in Green Schools initiative and have worked hard on achieving 4 flags to date.

The first flag we received was for the theme Litter and Waste.  We did lots of work around reducing litter and waste in both our school and local community.  Some of the activities we carried out included putting extra bins around our school, encouraging our local community to recycle, holding a recycling fashion show, making posters and flyers to place in local shops as well as many other activities.

The second flag we were awarded was for reducing our Energy consumption and raising awareness about Climate Change.  Some of the activities we carried out included reducing our energy usage in our school and holding low/no energy days in our classes.  We realised we use electricity a lot and how important it is that we try to reduce and save energy where possible.   Some children became energy ambassadors and reminded us to turn off lights and switches that we are not using.  We made information leaflets and bookmarks with tips on how to reduce energy and gave them out to our local community. We also had climate change workshops to help us all understand how our world is changing.

The third flag we got was based around the theme Water. We looked at ways of developing awareness around water conservation and ensuring we are using water correctly in our homes and school.  We recorded our water consumption and reduced it by a number of ways including changing our toilets and sinks to push button systems, reusing rain water around our school, making tips and information flyers for our local community and did lots of lovely lessons on how to reduce water usage in our homes.

The fourth flag we got was based around the theme Travel.  We worked really hard on increasing the number of our students walking, cycling, scooting, using public transport or carpooling on the way to school.  We got new bicycle racks for the bottom of our yard and we started an initiative called Walk on Wednesdays when we all made a huge effort to walk part or all of our school journey.  We did lots of activities on the benefits of exercise for our physical and mental wellbeing as well as looking the different ways people travel all around the world.  We had lots of fun with this flag.

We are looking forward to starting work on our next Green Flag which will be based around the theme Biodiversity.
