Scoil Íde's New Mini-Orchard
On Friday 3rd of March we planted a mini-orchard in the wildflower beds. Even though it was raining, we were so excited. Our 6th class committee members made a speech and read a poem about the beauty of orchards and we planted 6 apple trees (Katy, Boskoop and Discovery varieties), 2 plum trees (Victoria) and 2 pear trees (Conference).
The trees were generously provided by Host in Ireland - DC's for Bees as part of their pollinator plan. They have helped create nearly 3,000 community orchards across the whole island so far. With our school being part of that plan, our children will get to see for themselves how fruit grows, how we need to care for pollinators and how we need to provide the right kind of flowering plants for them also. We will look forward to harvesting our own Scoil Íde fruit each autumn too🍏🍎🍐.
William from The Echo newspaper was also there on the day taking great photos which were featured in last Thursday's edition of the paper. Thank you so much to everyone who helped out!
